I don't quite know how much stock I put into Astrology, but the one thing I identify with the most about being a Taurus is my adoration of all things natural, especially decorations and artwork. I think this is lovely and I want it in my garden.

Tomato Season is Coming to a Close!!! THE HORROR!!!

I cannot tell you how saddened my family becomes when tomato season draws to a close.
There is nothing, nothing, IN. THE. WORLD,
like a juicy, vine-ripened, heirloom tomato.
The refrigerated things that they sell in the grocery ARE NOT TOMATOES.
Technically, they are, but once you've had an actual, vine-ripened, delicious bite of heaven,
there's no way you can go back.
That's when you begin to await tomato season with a true, deep, and abiding love.
That's when you become saddened at the thought of the season ending,
and you find yourself having tomatoes with every meal,
because soon, all you'll have are those mediocre, over-priced, hothouse tomatoes
that they sell in the grocery in the off-season.

And that's just depressing to the taste buds.

"'97 Bonnie and Clyde" Cover by Tori Amos

I was driving this morning listening to Strange Little Girls,
Tori Amos's excellent album of cover songs, and heard this for the first time in years, her cover of Eminem's
"'97 Bonnie and Clyde"--

-Trigger Warning for Extreme and Graphic Violence-

Here are the lyrics to that gem of a song, in which Eminem details disposing of the bodies of his daughter's mother, step-dad, and step-brother with the toddler's help, and with his actual daughter cooing and baby-talking in the background music:

Baby, your da-da loves you
And I'm always gonna be here for you
No matter what happens
You're all I got in this world
I'd never give you up for nothin'
Nobody in this world is ever gonna keep you from me
I love you

Come on, Hay Hay, we going to the beach
Grab a couple of toys, and let da-da strap you in the car seat
Where's mama? She's taking a little nap in the trunk
Oh! That smell, da-da musta runned over a skunk

Now I know what you're thinking; it's kinda late to go swimming
But you know your mama; she's one of those type of women
That do crazy things, and if she don't get her way, she'll throw a fit
Don't play wit da-da's toy knife honey, let go of it

And don't look so upset, why you acting bashful
Don't you wanna help da-da build a sand castle?
And mama said she wants to show you how far she can float
Don't worry about that little boo-boo on her throat

It's just a little scratch, it don't hurt
Her was eating dinner while you were sweepin'
And spilt ketchup on her shirt
Mama's messy, isn't she?
We'll let her wash off in the water
And me and you can play by ourselves, can't we?

Just the two of us
Just the two of us
just the two of us
Just the two of us

See honey, there's a place called heaven and a place called hell
There's a placed called prison and a place called jail
And da-da's probably on his way to all of 'em, except one
'Cause mama's got a new husband and a stepson

And you don't want a brother, do ya?
Maybe when you're old enough to understand a little better
I'll explain it to you
But for now, we'll just say mama was real, real bad
She was being mean to dad and made him real, real mad

But I still feel sad that I put her on timeout
Sit back in your chair honey, quit trying to climb out
I told you it's okay, Hay Hay, you wanna bah-bah
Take a night-night
Na-na-goo-goo gah-gah
Her make coo-coo-caca
Dad'll change your di-dey
Clean the baby up, so she can take a nighty-nighty

Your dad'll wake her up as soon as we get to the water
97' Bonnie & Clyde, me and my daughter
Me and my daughter
Me and my daughter

Just the two of us
Just the two of us
just the two of us
Just the two of us

Wake up sweepy head, we're here
Before we play,
We're gonna take mommy for a wittle walk along the pier
Baby, don't cry honey, don't get the wrong idea
Mama's too sweepy to hear you screaming in her ear

That's why you can't get her to wake
But don't worry,
Da-da made a nice bed for mommy at the bottom of the lake
Here, you wanna help da-da tie a rope around this rock?
We'll tie it to her footsy, then we'll roll her off the dock

Ready now? Here we go, on the count of three
1, 2, free, weee
There goes mama, spwashing in the water
No more fighting with dad, no more restraining order

No more step da-da, no more brother
Blow her kisses buh-bye, tell mommy you love her
Now we'll go play in the sand, build a sand castle and junk
But first, just help dad with two more things out the trunk

Just the two of us

Marshall (Eminem) and Kim Mathers

Eminem and Hailie Jade, referred to in the song as "Hay Hay"

It got me thinking, I wonder how Hailie (16 today, pictured below) feels about this song now-- surely she's heard it-- but I can't find any reference to her reaction. There is a Twitter account that has since been called "100% False" by Eminem's representatives in which she says the songs about her "give (her) goosebumps."

I wonder.
I wonder how this rap (because there are other songs detailing exactly what Eminem would have liked to have done to Kim Mathers, horribly detailed songs) got explained to this child.

The "'97 Bonnie and Clyde"
co-starring the toddler as 'Bonnie.'

I wonder how she responded. No matter what type of mother Kim Mathers may be, no child deserves to hear that much sickening and nonchalant violence directed at her own mother.

That's all. I just wonder.

Also, here's a phenomenal review of Amos' cover:

My Favorite Shape Ever

The logarithmic spiral found in Nautilus seashells is also evident in the spiraling of tidal-washed kelp fronds and in the shape of our own skin pores, through which water vapor escapes.

Gorgeous!
I have collections upon collections of these seashells. I find the Fibonacci Sequence so incredibly fascinating. I could post pictures of these shells all day, but hope to share some of my own shadowbox work soon, with the shells and their cross-sections.

Until then, here's a beginner's guide, if you're not familiar with this natural phenomenon, and just a beautiful page if you are:

But... But... Sometimes I DO Bite My Friends!

This is a kids' show and also very popular with the stoner set. Watch this and you'll see why.

There are lots of fun musical guests, but this song with just the characters (and what characters!) I am particularly fond of...

Oddities

Any readers watching this show on The Science Channel? I'm simply obsessed with it. It chronicles the shop Obscura In New York City, an quirky antiques store that sells things from quack twentieth century medical equipment to deformed taxidermied animals. The shop's customers are frequently included, among them an artist who paints in his own blood, side-show performers, multiple contortionists, and a lot of well-known celebrities like Amy Sedaris and Chloe Sevigny. The real stars are the items in the shop, including some of which I love, such as an antique blood transfusion kit, a Victorian-era hair sculpture, and an exploded skull. In fact, the resident bone expert, Ryan, who creates the Beauchene skulls, is swoon-worthy, in my not-so-humble opinion. His realm of knowledge is also staggering.

The owners, Mike and Evan, are extremely personable and knowledgeable about their wares. The show is in a new season airing on Saturday nights and is frequently shown in marathons. I never seem to tire of watching. The next time I visit NYC, this will be my first stop.

Sweetie

Did she really say this? Who the hell knows. Did it make me laugh in a most unladylike fashion? You bet.
